GolfTour
This list contains some important Do's and Do-Not's
Starting GolfTour:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.. To start GolfTour, copy the entire GolfTour archive into an
empty directory on your hard drive. The directory name is unimportant
however you may want to use a name that is associated with the program.
If this is a registered version the INSTALL procedure has already done
this for you but please read ALL of the following.
2.. After all files are copied into the GolfTour directory, simply
type GOLFTOUR and press your <Enter/Return> Key. The first thing that
GolfTour does is look for a registered "key file" that tells GolfTour
it should run in "registered mode", unlocking all options that are
available to registered users only. If it finds the "key file" it
will, open it and extract certain information from it and verify that
information against other information imbedded into GolfTour itself.
If the information from the "key file" and the imbedded information
combined, result in a certain number between 1 and 18 million, then
GolfTour knows it's supposed to run in "registered mode." If it does
not find the "key file" or the incorrect number is produced, it will
run in the "shareware mode" where certain options are not available
and capacities are limited. GolfTour will advise you as to what
mode it's running in after about 2 seconds have elapsed.
3.. After GolfTour loads and displays the MainMenu screen, you will
notice some words across the top most line. These words are "headings"
that can either be selected with a Mouse or by pressing and releasing
the <Alt> Key. These heading are as follows:
MISC ADD REVIEW PRINT EDIT UTILS QUIT
When any of these headings are selected, a PullDown Menu will appear
directly beneath it with several options that can be selected by
either clicking them with the Mouse pointer or by using the DownArrow
and UpArrow Keys to "hi-lite" the desired option and pressing <Enter>.
Use the RightArrow/LeftArrow Keys to move across the headings.
4.. The first thing that must be done is to select the ADD heading
and when the PullDown Menu appears, select "Tournament". To get help
with adding a Tournament record, press the <F1> Key and a help screen
will appear with instructions for adding a Tournament record. Note
that a Tournament record is required before any of the other options
available under the ADD heading will work. Press <F1> when at the
PullDown Menu option "Tournament" to access the online help.
5.. After the Tournament record is completed and saved, you must
either elect to add a Team record or Golfer record, depending on what
type of Tournament you will be working with. Two types of Tournaments
are available; the first type is a "Team event" where teams of from
2 to 6 Golfers compete against other teams. This is a type "1" event.
The other type of Tournament available is where you have individual
Golfers competing against each other. This is a type "2" event.
6.. If you are going to work with a type "1" event, you must add a
Team record for each team competing in the Tournament. After assuring
yourself that all Team or Golfer records are entered into the database,
you may begin adding Game records.
7.. When adding Game records it is VERY IMPORTANT that ALL the Game
records for the FIRST DAY of tournament play are added BEFORE ANY of
the Game records for the second and subsequent days are added. GolfTour
uses the score from the first game recorded for each Team/Golfer to
determine which Flight/Bracket the Team/Golfer is placed in. After the
first day's games are added, it doesn't matter in what order any
additional games are added.
8.. After adding the necessary Tournament, Team or Golfer, and
Game records, you discover that you made a mistake in entering the
data, you must use the options available under the EDIT heading to
correct the error. Note that if you remove a Team or Golfer record
after the Tournament begins, any Game records belonging to the Team
or Golfer removed will also be removed. When removing a Tournament
record, ALL Game records belonging to that Tournament will also be
removed.
9.. Team and Golfer records can be left in the database for later
Tournaments and do not have to be entered but one time unless they
are removed. To remove a record of any type, select the heading
UTILS and then select the desired type of record to be removed from
the PullDown Menu. Note that once a record is removed, it will be
overwritten with other records and will not be recoverable.
10. To use any of the options available under the PRINT heading,
you must have a printer. Either dot matrix or Laser is acceptable.
If you wish to review a list of scores or the Flight lists but not
print them, select the REVIEW heading and then select the option of
choice from the PullDown Menu. GolfTour will advise you that it's
searching for and compiling the data, then display it to the screen
or printer, depending on the desired result.
11. While GolfTour has an almost unlimited capacity (limited only
by the available memory and hard drive space), it is best to remove
older Tournament records every now and then. This will help to
increase the speed and decrease the memory required when doing any
type of search and compile operation. The fewer old records that
GolfTour has to wade through the better.
12. GolfTour will also print Sign-Up sheets and Tournament Entry
forms if desired. Either dot matrix or Laser printer is acceptable
when printing these forms. These options are available under the
PRINT heading. Before these forms can be printed, you must have a
Tournament record entered into the database. GolfTour uses the name
of the Tournament and the amount of the Entry Fee from the Tournament
record when printing the Entry forms and Sign-Up sheets.
13. There is a "Course Handicap" option available to registered users
under the REVIEW heading. This option will allow you to determine a
Course Handicap (not to be confused with a Handicap Index) for any
Golfer on any course. You must know the Slope rating of the course
and the Handicap Index of the Golfer before you can get accurate
results. This option was added since GolfTour allows you to input
a "handicap" figure if desired when entering either a Golfer or Team
record.
14. You may also input a handicap figure for a Tournament record if
desired. If you input a handicap figure for an individual Golfer or
Team record, this will take replace any handicap figure that you input
in the Tournament record for this Team or Golfer's games. To use no
handicap for any record just press <Enter> without entering an amount
when you see the prompts asking for a handicap and GolfTour will skip
to the next available prompt.
15. When you encounter a prompt that will not let you skip to the
next prompt by pressing the <Enter> Key, then it's telling you that
you MUST enter something before you can go to the next prompt. If
you wish to quit at any prompt, press <F10> then press <Enter> to
exit without saving the record and return to the MainMenu.
16. Remember the following:
Enter a Tournament record FIRST before entering any other
records.
Be sure Team or Golfer records have been entered BEFORE you
enter any Game records.
Be sure ALL score cards have been received for the FIRST DAY of
play AND entered into the database BEFORE entering scores for the
second or subsequent days of tournament play.
Allow only ONE individual to use GolfTour when entering records
of any type. You may get duplicate records if more than one
individual is entering records. Once a score card is entered
into the database, mark it in a way to indicate it's been entered
and won't be accidentally entered again.
Verify the information entered into a Game record against the
score card before saving the record then mark the score card to
indicate it's been entered into a Game Record. BE SURE you
verify the Team or Golfer NAME on the score card against the
one showing on the Game record display screen.
Online help is available for every menu option in all the
PullDown Menu boxes. To access online help, use the Arrow
Keys to hi-lite the desired option and press <F1>. To exit
an online help screen, press <F1> again or press <Escape>.
If the screen is full, it may be scrolled using the DownArrow,
UpArrow, PageDown, PageUp, Home and End keys.
The following pages contain information about each MainMenu heading
and the selections under each in the PullDown Menu. Each MainMenu
heading will be in all capital letters with the PullDown Menu options
located beneath them in the order they are found.
About
~~~~~
This PullDown Menu selection will display the RiverBend SoftWare
copyright notice and other information about RiverBend SoftWare
Help
~~~~
A brief explanation about using the built-in OnLine Help when
using GolfTour.
Extras
~~~~~~
A list of additional items available in the registered version
of GolfTour.
Register
~~~~~~~~
Use this selection to enter information and print the form
used to register GolfTour. A printer is required if you elect to
print the form after entering the necessary information. An order
form is also available as the text file ORDER.FRM that can be printed
using the DOS command PRINT ORDER.FRM then completed by filling in
the necessary information by hand.
Quit
~~~~
Use this selection when you are ready to quit GolfTour and
return to the DOS prompt, Windows, or the menu from where GolfTour
was called.
ADD
~~~
Tournament
~~~~~~~~~~
This is the selection that must be made FIRST before entering
any Team, Golfer or Game records. A Tournament record contains the
information necessary for GolfTour to place Game scores into their
respective Flight/Brackets, print Tournament Entry Forms, Tournament
Sign-Up sheets, etc.
Golfer
~~~~~~
Use this selection when you are entering individual Golfer
records for a Tournament designated as a Type "2" tournament. A
Type "2" tournament is one in which individual Golfer's compete
against each other as compared to a Team event (Type "1"). After
entering information here, it can be retained for as long as needed
for other tournaments, telephone and address information, etc.
Team
~~~~
This is where you enter information for a Team entering a
Tournament designated as a Type "1" event. This is where Teams
made up of from 2 to 6 Golfers compete against other Teams. You
may retain Team records for as long as necessary in the database.
When you have a later Tournament, if the team is made up of the
same members, you already have the necessary information. If any
of the team members change, you can change their names by using the
"Edit Team" option found under the heading EDIT at the MainMenu.
As many as 6 Golfers can be placed on one Team. If desired you
can assign the Team a handicap. A Team is usually made of of a
"Team Leader" or captain and up to 5 additional members.
Game
~~~~
This is where you enter individual Game records from info.
taken directly from the score card when it is turned in. When you
add a Game record, you first select the Tournament to which the
Game will apply. Next you select the Team or Golfer who turned in
the score card. When you get to the Game record screen, you only
need enter the number of holes played (9 or 18), then enter the
score for each hole. If the Team or Golfer has a handicap assigned
to it, both the Gross Score and Net Score will be shown.
IMPORTANT: When entering Game records, be SURE you have all
Team or Golfer records saved in the database BEFORE the first Game
record is ever entered. Next, BE SURE you only enter Game records
for the FIRST DAY OF PLAY before you enter Game records for games
played on the second or subsequent days. All Teams and Golfers are
flighted based on the scores from the first day of tournament play.
Entering Game records for the second or later days before ALL Game
records from the first day of play will cause the Teams/Golfers to
possibly be placed in the wrong Flights/Brackets.
REVIEW
~~~~~~
Game Record
~~~~~~~~~~~
Use this selection to pull up for review, any Game record still
in the database. You first select the tournament in which the game
you want to review the scores then GolfTour will compile the list
and display it to the screen. It compiles it anew each time this
option is selected in case any of the Game records have been edited
to change the scores. Depending on the number of Game records in
the database, allow GolfTour several seconds to wade through them and
select the scores from the selected Tournament, sort the list in
ascending sequence and display the list to the screen. If you wish
you must select "Flight Summary" from the PullDown Menu found under
the PRINT heading at the MainMenu.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This option is available only in the registered version of
GolfTour. When using this option, you must know the Slope rating of
the course being played and the Golfer's Handicap Index before you
can get accurate results.
PRINT
~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This option requires a printer, either dot matrix or Laser.
This list is the same list that is displayed to screen when selecting
the "Flight Summary" under the REVIEW heading at the MainMenu.
This list will consist of two or more pages with the first page
showing a brief summary of Flight/Bracket information, then a separate
page or pages for each additional Flight that was selected using the
"Edit Tournament" options discussed earlier.
Be sure you printer is turned ON and has an adequate supply of
paper.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This option will print the same list of all Tournament scores
for all games recorded in the database that belong to the selected
Tournament. Scores are sorted in ascending order (lowest to highest)
You may elect to print from 1 to 99 copies of this report.
This list can consist of 2 or more pages so be sure your printer
~~~~~~~~~~~
Use this selection to print Tournament Entry Forms. You can
print from 1 to 99 at a time after first selecting the Tournament
for which the forms are to be prepared for. The form will ask for
general information usually needed by the Tournament Committee.
Space is provided for indicating the entry fee is paid, if a rental
cart is required, address, phone, etc.
Entry forms can be serially numbered if desired by indicating
a starting number (1 - 9500) at the prompt when asked.
A printer is required for this option. Be sure it is turned ON
and has an adequate supply of paper loaded.
Sign-Up Sheets
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and has an adequate supply of paper loaded.
EDIT
~~~~
Tournament
~~~~~~~~~~
Use this selection to make any changes needed to a Tournament
record. You can change such items as the standard handicap figure,
dates, number of Flights/Brackets, etc.
This option must be used when entering the minimum and maximum
scores to be used for the different Flights/Brackets. When entering
the maximum value for the LAST Flight/Bracket enter a number larger
than the highest estimated score to be recorded.
NOTE: Use the "Tournament Scores" option found under the
heading REVIEW to aid you in selecting the breakpoints
for the different Flights/Brackets.
Golfer
~~~~~~

such items as handicap figure, name, address, and indicate if the
Tournament entry fee has been paid in full and if not, the balance
outstanding.
Team
~~~~
such items as handicap amount, names, addresses, and indicate if the
Tournament entry fee has been paid in full and if not, the balance
outstanding.
Game
~~~~
Use this option to change individual hole scores for any Game
record in the database. You first select the Tournament in which the
Game was played then select the desired Game.
UTILS
~~~~~
Printer Port
~~~~~~~~~~~~
GolfTour recognizes any of three Parallel ports (1,2,3) to be
used when performing a print operation. When GolfTour is loaded for
the first time, the default port is set as #1. If your system uses
Parallel port #1 then there's no need to change it.
Date Format
~~~~~~~~~~~
GolfTour will use either of two date formats. The default is
to use the standard format of MM-DD-YYYY. The other format available
is the military or european format of DD-MM-YYYY. Once you select a
date format, it's best to stick with it as GolfTour does some sorting
based on the date and changing it in mid-stream will cause the sorting
routines to produce inaccurate results.
Remove Tournament
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When this option is selected, GolfTour will first ask you to
select the Tournament record to be deleted. After the selection is
made, GolfTour will delete the Tournament records along with ALL game
records belonging to that Tournament. Always run the ReIndex DataBase
procedure after removing a Tournament.
Note that once a record is removed, it is lost and gone forever.
Be sure you no longer need the Tournament record or the associated
Game records before making this selection.
Remove Golfer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Selecting this option will present you with a PickList of the
Golfer records in the database. Once the Golfer to be deleted is
selected, GolfTour will delete ALL Game records belonging to that
Golfer and deduct these Game records found from each Tournament
where the Golfer has recorded a Game score.
Remove Team
~~~~~~~~~~~
Selecting this option will present you with a PickList of the
Team records in the database. Once the Team to be deleted has been
selected, GolfTour will delete ALL Game records belonging to that
Team and deduct these Game records found from each of the associated
Tournament records.
ReIndex DataBase
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Use this option to tidy up the database after removing any type
of record. Depending on the number of records remaining in the data-
base, this option may take a couple of minutes to do its job. No records
are removed or altered during this operation, rather they are all checked
for accuracy and to be sure they are still valid records.
NOTES:
If you don't know a Golfer's Handicap Index, look into our
GolfClub and GolfLog software. Both of these programs maintain a
database of Golfers and the games they have played and will update
their Handicap Index after each game is recorded. The Handicap Index
produced by GolfClub and GolfLog will match that provided the the
United States Golf Association and the Royal Canadian Golf Association.
GolfClub is designed for club use and will maintain a database
of unlimited Golfers and games.
GolfLog is designed for individual use and will maintain a
database of 8 individual Golfers and 4,000 games.
Both of these programs can be ordered directly from RiverBend
SoftWare using Money Order or Check. Note that checks and
money orders must be payable in U.S. funds.
